BAGO

It is very easy to do a day trip to Bago, only 80 km from Yangon. You can easily get there by road or by rail. In history, it was mentioned as Hantha-waddy, a royal capital of Mon national races. Early Europeans called it Pegu-an important seaport.

Kanbawza-Thadi Palace is at the original site of Hantha-waddy, walled in the Mon Style. Only brick foundations are original while everything else was built anew. King Bayinnaung was known as founder of the second Myanmar Empire, Hantha-waddy.

Shwe-tha-lyaung reclining Buddha Image is 55 m long and 16 m high. The measurements of each body parts can be observed on a list in front of it. Shwe-mawtaw Pagoda, having a height of 114 m, is the highest stupa in Myanmar even higher than great Shwedagon in Yangon.

    

Pho Kyar Elephant Camp

Pho Kyar Elephant Camp has demonstrations showing how these animals are captured and domesticated. Visitors can enjoy a ride on elephants. The camp, on the banks of the Thaing Creek in Taungoo township Bago Region, was established in the area and it is possible for visitors to seek working elephants in action.
